Study Groups

Smaller study groups allow people the opportunity to have more intimate discussions about the bible or books they are studying. They also create lasting friendships and support systems as participants get to know one another.

Take advantage of one of these great study group opportunities:

Calvary Book Group

An average of a dozen participants attend the lay-led Calvary Book Group, which meets monthly in members’ homes to discern and discuss the theological themes in contemporary fiction and non-fiction. Books studied have included How Good Do We Have to Be? by Rabbi Harold S. Kushner, Take This Bread by Sara Miles, Gilead:A Novel by Marilynne Robinson, and South of Broad by Pat Conroy. Men's Bible Study: Thursday Mornings

An informal, small group approach to bible study, the Thursday morning Men's Bible Study is lay led and reads and discusses the Gospel lesson for the upcoming Sunday.  Greater emphasis is placed upon sharing ways that the bible passages can make sense for our daily lives.  All men are welcome to attend this bible study on Thursdays, from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., at La Baguette on Poplar.

Women's Bible Study: Thursday Mornings

During the fall, winter, and spring, the Rev. Deacon Mimsy Jones leads a group of women in a weekly bible study.  This fall, the group will study the Old Testament beginning with Genesis. This group meets in a parishioner's home on Thursdays, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

Women's Bible Study: Thursday Noontime

On Thursdays during the Downtown Table Fellowship Lunch (12:15-1:15 p.m.), women of all ages and stages of life gather in the Luke Room for a lay-lead discussion of the Gospel lesson for the upcoming Sunday. Participants try to answer what is happening in the text, how the story or text is happening around us, and how this story is our story. The group takes 15 minutes to settle and visit, then studies from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. The last 15 minutes are spent wrapping up the study and saying good-byes. This allows women with busy schedules to eat, study, and travel to and from work or home within an hour. Parking in Calvary's lot is free for this activity. All women are welcome. Women's Bible Study: Thursday Noontime "Out East"

On Thursdays from 12:00-1:00 p.m. women of all ages and stages of life gather in the Parish Library at St. George's Episcopal Church (2425 S. Germantown Road in Germantown) for a lay-lead discussion of the Gospel lesson for the upcoming Sunday. Facilitated by Calvary parishioner Laura Trott, the group's discussion centers on what is happening in the text, how the story or text is happening around us, and how this story is our story. The group takes 15 minutes to settle and visit, then studies from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. The last 15 minutes are spent wrapping up the study and saying good-byes. This allows women with busy schedules to eat, study, and travel to and from work or home within an hour. All women are welcome. Contact Ebet Peeples to learn more.
