Her book, Take This Bread, recounts how she was raised an atheist, lived an enthusiastically secular life as a restaurant cook and writer, and how early one morning, for no earthly reason, she wandered into a church. "I was certainly not interested in becoming a Christian," she writes. "Or, as I thought of it rather less politely, a religious nut." But she ate a piece of bread, took a sip of wine, and found herself radically transformed. Inspired by the experience of her conversion, Sara Miles founded The Food Pantry, which offers free groceries to over 750 hungry families a week and organizes poor people to feed each other.
