When the Lenten Noonday Preaching Series and Waffle Shop begin on Thursday, February 18, hundreds of visitors will start pouring into Calvary’s buildings. The success of these annual “Gifts to the City” depend on the efforts of our parish. Please get involved in the ministry of Lent and sign up to help with these volunteer opportunities:
Spread the Word: Everyone can do this!!! Most people first come to the Lenten Series or Waffle Shop because someone invited them to come with them. Invite a friend to come to the Lenten Series and Waffle Shop with you. Let people know that St. Mary’s Episcopal Church has graciously offered their gated, secure, and FREE parking lots to us during the Series. Calvary will provide a free shuttle service every ten minutes to and from St. Mary’s from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. If your friends’ time is limited, remind them that “Lunches to Go” Waffle Shop orders may be placed in the Great Hall prior to the services so that they can enjoy both the Lenten speakers and Waffle Shop.
Dinner Party: Our out-of-town guests are thrown a dinner party one night of their stay. You may request to host a dinner party in your home for one of the speakers by contacting Margaret McLean.
Greeters: Calvary’s
buildings can feel like a maze to first-time visitors. Volunteer
to be a greeter and assist in the important work of welcoming visitors
and guiding them through the buildings of Calvary. Greeters are needed
during the high-traffic times of 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Contact
Peggy Owen .
Shuttle Drivers: Help make free and easier parking a reality for our Lenten guests! Volunteer to drive back and forth between St. Mary’s and Calvary transporting visitors. Drivers are needed to volunteer one day a week from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Contact Jim Coleman to learn more.
Speaker Shepherds & Speaker Transportation: If you are looking for a unique opportunity to spend some one-on-one-time with our speakers, then volunteer to be a “Shepherd” by contacting Margaret McLean. Shepherds pick up the speaker at the hotel and escort him/her to Calvary; GET A FREE & RESERVED PARKING SPOT; dine with the speaker at the Speaker Table in Waffle Shop; and return the speaker to the hotel or escort him/her to wherever he/she wants to visit in the afternoon. You also can spend time with a speaker by offering to pick him or her up at the airport and escort him/her to the hotel. To help with “airport traffic” contact Ray Hatton.
Tape & CD Ministry: Need
a seated job but don’t
want to miss the speaker? You can hear the sermon over the audio
system in the Library. The Library will need two volunteers a day
to take orders for sermon tapes and CDs. The hours are from 11:30
a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each weekday during the Series. To volunteer, contact Pat Robison.
Ushers: The time commitment of this ministry is only one hour (11:40 a.m.-12:40 p.m.). Ushers stand at the doors prior to the service and hand out bulletins. They also help count how many people have attended the service and help with the collection afterwards. If you are planning to come hear a certain speaker, this is an easy way to participate in the ministry of the Series. Contact Laurence Ritter to sign up.
Waffle Shop Kitchen Volunteers:
There
is an art to Waffle Shop and volunteers are well trained and committed
to its great traditions. Kitchen volunteers work from
8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., but are welcome to sign up to help anytime within those hours. The kitchen can use all the help it can get! If you would like to learn more about volunteering
in the Waffle Shop, perhaps in the dessert room, salad room, or chicken
ranch, please contact Karen Butler.
Waffle Shop Waiters & Waitresses & Cashiers: This
job is all about hospitality and serving! Wait staff shifts are from
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day of Waffle Shop. Duties include greeting
guests, carrying food trays, and setting tables. Wait staff get a
Waffle Shop lunch after close each day. Childcare for Calvary Waffle
Shop volunteers’ children
will be available on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. until
2:00 p.m. Children will have supervised play in Room 202 and will
get to enjoy a waffle for lunch. To learn more about volunteering
at the Waffle Shop as a waiter/waitress, contact Leslie
Atwood Smith.
Seated cashier jobs also are a part of this section of Waffle Shop.
To volunteer as a cashier, call Mary Sewell Wolf.
Honorary Waffle Shop Workers: If there is no way that you can make it to Calvary to volunteer at the Waffle Shop, you can help support the ministry of Waffle Shop by being an “honorary” waiter or waitress. Just send a donation to cover the cost the Waffle Shop takes on to pay servers from other churches. Your check for any amount, made out to Calvary Church with a memo to “honorary” Waffle Shop waiter or waitress, can be sent to Calvary, ATTN: Waffle Shop, 102 N. Second St., Memphis, TN, 38103.
