Calvary Episcopal Church is a lively parish dedicated to making God's love visible in downtown Memphis, by living out our core values of FAITH: Forgiveness, Action, Inquiry, Togetherness, and Hallelujah! Whether centered on support, fellowship, service or spirituality, the following opportunities bring people further into community with one another and allow them to share their time, talent, and treasure.  We welcome you to participate!

Fellowship

The Episcopal Church Women (ECW) of Calvary will meet on Monday, March 1, at the home of Helen Bird. Carissa Hussong, chair of Calvary's Outreach Grant committee, will discuss Community Outreach. All women of the parish are invited to attend. For more information, contace ECW President Molly Polatty.

The Men's Journey Group will meet on Tuesday, March 2, beginning with fellowship at 5:30 p.m. At 6:00 p.m., Susan Deason, Program Manager for Youth Villages and its local program, the Anaya Partnership. Deason will discuss the most pressing issues faced by at-risk youth in Memphis and how the Anaya Partnership helps young people and families overcome them. All men of the parish are invited. Cost for dinner is $10. RSVP for this event to Tom Chamberlain.

Calvary parishioners care deeply for one another. Learn more about opportunities to pray for one another (today's prayers and DOK), to serve on Care Teams, and to give aid to those who are nearing the end of their lives through the Emmaus Ministry.

 

Service/Outreach

Grizzlies Book Drive- Many of Calvary parishioners generously contributed
books last spring to the Grizzlies’ Academy for students’ summer reading. Once again, Calvary’s help is needed to provide more books, both new and slightly used. The students of the Grizzlies’ Academy, as well as Ms. Brooks have provided a “wish list.” A copy of the list may be found next to the marked box outside Calvary’s library on the second floor. Could It Be “Easy” Being Green? Want to make Calvary Episcopal Church a “greener” operation? Speak to Vestry member David Balling about joining the committee that will look at parish practices with an eye toward becoming better stewards of the earth.

 

Collect Box Tops for Education for Carnes Elementary School. Each returned box top provides the school with 10 cents. A collection bin is located near the Community Service bulletin board outside the Calvary Library.

 

Public School Partners- Learn more about the volunteer opportunities available at our partner public schools, Carnes Elementary and the Grizzlies Academy.

The Hospitality Hub, a ministry to connect homeless people with the resources they need to begin their journey out of homelessness, welcomes new volunteers. To learn more about volunteering at the Hub, please contact David Figiel.

The Hospitality Hub has a number of needs including: reading glasses, books, magazines, books of stamps, Walgreen's (800 minute) long-distance calling cards, MATA bus passes, Office Depot gift cards, large unopened cans of coffee, large unopened bags of sugar, large unopened bottles of pine cleaner or bleach, plain white business envelopes, large pump bottles of hand sanitizer, and 8x10 black- or clear-edged picture frames. Donations may left in the Hub collection bin on the second floor near the Calvary Library.

Soup Sunday soups are prepared the Saturday before Soup Sunday (usually the second Sunday of the month) from 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. in Calvary's kitchen. No training is necessary. Contact Merrill Ann Cole to learn more about volunteering with the Soup Sunday ministry.

The Community Breakfast Ministry is collecting blue jeans, sleeping bags, lotion, razors, toothbrushes, t-shirts, socks, belts, backpacks, and anything else men might need, to distribute on Sunday mornings. Donations may be left in the blue clothes bin on the first floor at the bottom of the main stairwell. MIFA is happy to receive women's and children's clothing.

Education

Sunday Fall Term Classes for adults, youth, & children continue this Sunday at 10:15 a.m.

Koinonia, Calvary's Wednesday evening program, features dinner, Adult classes and music ensemble rehearsals.

The Next Welcome Class will be held on Sunday, March 7, at 10:15 a.m., in the second floor Parish Library. The Welcome Class is a simple introduction to life at Calvary Church. It is intended to help you discover how we are a community committed to making God’s love visible, and to help you discern whether this is the place where you can best explore your journey of faith. Worship

Sunday Worship Services services are offered at 7:45, 9:00, & 11:15 a.m. Learn more about worship at Calvary.

Holy Eucharist and the Imposition of Ashes will be held on February 17, at 7:30 a.m., 12:05 p.m., and at 6:30 p.m. During the 6:30 p.m. service, children age 3 through 3rd grade will be invited to participate in a special Ash Wednesday worship experience. Childcare for children 5 and under also will be available during the 6:30 p.m. service. A soup and salad supper will be offered at 5:00 p.m. Costs: $4/adults, $2/children 12 and under, $15/max per family.


The Altar Guild of Calvary will have a cleaning and fellowship gathering on Saturday, March 20, from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. If you have always wanted

Children's Chapel Volunteers are needed to help escort children to and from Children’s Chapel and to help lead the Children’s Chapel services. A member of the Calvary clergy and song leader Brie Wallace are on hand to lead various parts of the service as well. You don’t have to be a parent to get involved. Volunteers serve on a rotation one Sunday every couple of months. To learn more about this rewarding volunteer opportunity, contact Heather Anderson.

Make a Joyful Noise! The Parish Choir sings beautiful music each Sunday for the 9 a.m. liturgy. Calvary Choir offers experienced singers an opportunity to sing more challenging music at 11:15 a.m. each Sunday. Calvary’s Children’s Choir meets each Wednesday, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., and sings about once a month. Children in Senior-K and older are invited to join. The Calvary Ringers is a handbell ensemble that continues to grow, both in skill and numbers. It is not necessary that you read music, but it does help. The ringers meet each Wednesday, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., and play about every other month at the 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. liturgies. Contact Choirmaster Sumner Jenkins to talk more about the wide range of music-making opportunities at Calvary.

CORE, the Community of Rhodes Episcopalians, meets for worship and dinner on Sundays and Thursday evenings at Rhodes College during the school year. Learn more about upcoming worship and volunteer opportunities.

Wednesday Morning Eucharist- If you've had to miss Sunday services in your spiritual home or are just looking for a chance to stay connected with your spiritual foundation during the week, please come and worship at Calvary this Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. Free parking is available in the Calvary lot at Adams and Third. After the service, coffee will be served in the Crump Parlor.

Morning Prayer Leaders Needed- Calvary maintains a cycle of Morning Prayer, offered in the church at 8:40 on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. If you would like to explore leading the prayer gatherings on Fridays, please contact Andy MacBeth. Training is available.

Wedding Altar Guild Team- The Altar Guild Team that coordinates weddings at Calvary is expanding and looking for people who would like to be trained. If you would like to learn more about helping during wedding rehearsals and weddings, please contact Ebet Peeples.

Homemade baked bread is served during the 10:00 a.m. Eucharist on Sunday mornings. There are a number of openings for bread bakers on the calendar. Please contact Debbie Balling if you would like to bake bread for a service.

Retreats

St. Clare Retreat- A St. Clare Half-Day Silent Retreat for Women will be held on Friday, March 5, at St. Columba Conference Center beginning at 8:30 a.m. and ending with lunch at noon. The cost is $20, which includes morning coffee and lunch. Reservations may be made with Dana Sue Percer.
