Youth Ministries at Calvary ChurchNew Orleans Mission Trip

Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. (I Timothy 4:12)

In addition to Sunday morning education classes, youth in grades 6-12 have many opportunities to participate in the life of the church.  Teens serve an integral role as acolytes, lectors, and Eucharistic Ministers in the 9:00 and 11:15 a.m. services on Sunday mornings.

Other opportunities for Episcopal youth include participating in the Diocesan Youth Council (DYC) events; being a part of the Happening community in West Tennessee, a spiritual retreat experience for teens; and going to various camps, retreats, and mission trips

Sunday Evenings

5:00-7:00

6-12 grades

Youth gather for dinner, fellowship, worship, singing, and reflection. Sunday evenings end on a mellow note with student-led worship .  EYC also has special events such as retreats, mission trips, lock-ins, and field trips.  A great team of adult EYC leaders includes Heather Anderson, Dave Leigh, Andrew Moore, Sarah Squire, and Brie Wallace.

The AlternativeThe Alternative

Every Wednesday Night

6:30-8:00

Grades 9-12

The Alternative is a church service at Church of the Holy Communion aimed at giving youth a different and more comfortable way to worship. We all are in many different stages of our own faith development and this unique service aims to meet anyone regardless of where they are on their own journey. The Alternative is held in Quilling Chapel on Wednesday nights. The service is filled with contemporary Christian music, prayers from the Book of Common Prayer, the previous week's Revised Common Lectionary reading, and a homily, given by a senior in high school.

DYC Fall Kick OFf

Diocesan Youth Council (DYC)

DYC, comprised primarily of students, is an organization whose mission is to sponsor youth events throughout the Diocese of West Tennessee. This includes Bishop's Bash, the Feast of Lights, Junior High Spring Fling, and Happening.  Many of Calvary's youth are active participants and several serve on the council.

EYCJ2A, Journey to Adulthood, is a complete youth ministry program of spiritual formation for 6th-12th grades. It uses Bible study, prayer, rites of passage, outreach ministries and both serious and playful activities to underscore its core principles:

1) Manhood and womanhood are free gifts from God.

2) Adulthood must be earned.

There are three two-year segments of the program:

Rite-13: The first two years (6th & 7th graders) focus on celebrating the individuality of each young person and their creative potential. The Rite-13 liturgy (A celebration of Manhood and Womanhood) is the community expression of this.

J2A: The middle portion of the program (8th & 9th graders), engages youth with the skills and critical thinking involved in adulthood. The youth plan and embark on a pilgrimage together at the end of this segment.

YAC: A mentor-based program helping older teens (10th-12th grade) to discern and carry out a ministry within their church or in the larger community. Vocation and development of a personal credo are also emphasized.

Confirmation Group 09Sunday Morning Sunday School

Grades 9-12/Room 301

In our High School Class, we focus on how we grow into our faith and how our faith shapes our daily lives.  Using Journey to Adulthood lessons, we explore how the gospels inform how we experience the world.

Grades 6-8/Room 302

Using lessons from Rite 13 to explore themes from the gospels and daily life, our Middle School class focuses on learning how to interact as a community of faith, recognizing the gifts God has given us, and celebrating our creative potential.
